Evennett Earns Second Career Round Podium in Perth

Round three of the Trans Am Cup Series took us across the country to MotorMall Raceway in Wanneroo, Perth.
It’s the first time GRM have ventured out west since 2019, but that didn’t slow us down with James Moffat and Lachy Evennett both featuring on the podium across the weekend.
The usual weekend schedule for Supercars events saw us take in Practice, Qualifying and Race 1 on a busy Friday program.
Three GRM cars featured in the top 10 in Qualifying, Moffat leading the way in fifth with Evennett in sixth and Jack Smith in eighth. All four cars, and our two Marcos Ambrose Motorsport alliance cars moved forward in the weekend’s opening race.
Moffat and Evennett both moved up a position, while Smith made two spots to sixth. Elliot Barbour and Tom Davies both fought from outside the top 10 to finish eighth and tenth while Jordan Freestone found ground to 14th.
Race 2 was a spectacle on the TV screens, but an exercise in walking on eggshells for the drivers. Overnight rain meant a slightly more than damp track greeted the drivers, and given our 30-minute race duration, slicks were the best long-term option.
After an opening few laps that resembled dirt racing at times with the lack of traction available underfoot, the race settled into a rhythm and our cars began to fly near the end of the race as the dry setups came to the fore. Moffat added another podium finish to his season tally with third place, Smith and Evennett both joining him inside the Top 10 in fifth and seventh. Davies, Barbour and Freestone filled out 13th to 15th with Barbour recording the fastest lap of the race.
It was a brutal start to Race 3, with an all-in parking lot at Turn 1 claiming all six of our cars in some shape or form. Moffat unfortunately copped a post-race penalty for his role, with Smith and Freestone both sustaining major damage. Barbour took to the gravel in avoidance while Davies was turned around in the melee. Evennett just snuck through with some front-end damage but still set a new race lap record on his way to second place. Barbour fought back to finish fifth, while Davies clawing his way back to 10th.
A consistent weekend and a strong finish handed Evennett his second career Trans Am round podium, following his breakthrough at Mallala last year.
A busy period for Trans Am kicks off with Queensland Raceway next up from August 21-23, before Tailem Bend from September 11-13.
