Moffat Clinches First Round Win of 2025 in Darwin

Another wild encounter in the Trico Trans Am Series has come and gone, with James Moffat elevating his LMCT+ Mustang to the front of the field for his first round and race wins of 2025.

The weekend started strong for Moffat, who was second fastest in what would turn out to be the one and only substantial practice session. A significant fire, following an engine failure, for Elliott Cleary on the opening lap of practice two halted that session before it really began. Fortunately Cleary was unharmed in the incident, but the Custom Transport Equipment entry was ruled out for the weekend in spite of the GRM crew’s best efforts.

Moffat continued his strong start with a front row effort in Friday afternoon qualifying, with Jordan Cox in 11th, Tom Davies in 18th and Lachlan Evennett in 20th.

After dropping to fourth off the start in the opening race of the weekend, Moffat rebounded in an energised battle with former GRM stalwart Nathan Herne to pick up third place. Cox was rotated at the first corner, but was able to recover for a 15th place finish in his Schaeffler Mustang.

Davies was the big mover, storming up 10 positions to record an eighth place finish in his first ever race around Hidden Valley Raceway. Evennett was hot on his heels as well, until he was turned late in the piece and dropped to 16th.

Race two only saw three green flag laps, with Moffat leaping to second in the opening corners before the first Safety Car. Evennett was an innocent party to one of a few opening lap crashes, getting collected at turn five, with Davies also turned up the road at turn six.

In a two-lap dash to the finish, Moffat pounced on the race lead and led the field home to the chequered flag for his first win of the season. Cox snuck through the mayhem to finish in sixth, with Evennett and Davies getting home in 16th and 20th.

The weekend ended with the calmest race of the season, with Moffat holding the field back at arm’s length all race long as he led from start to finish. Evennett impressed as he came from the back of the field to finish in 11th, with Davies in 17th after again getting turned around early and Cox 21st after being forced to pit with damage.

Overall, the dual Sunday race wins were enough to earn Moffat the round victory and reward the team for what was a massive weekend in the paddock.

The next round of the series has been shifted to our backyard, with a trip to Sandown Raceway on the cards amid a return to the Shannons SpeedSeries from July 25-27.
