NEW STRUCTURE STILL A LEARNING PROCESS FOR REIGNING TITLE HOLDER

Reigning Turtle Wax Trans Am Series winner Nathan Herne has admitted he is still adapting to his new support set-up after transitioning to Garry Rogers Motorsport for this year’s campaign.

Herne is engaged in a tight title fight this season, leading the series by seven-points from Wall Racing’s Tim Brook approaching the third round at Bathurst.

The young gun transitioned fully into GRM’s program this year after a successful stint at Dream Racing Australia and is continuously learning within the new structure at each round.

“This year is my first time actually with the team,” he said. “The boys that are working on my car, it’s their first time with me and vice versa.

“It’s been a big learning curve for all of us and we’re still doing so every time we’re at the track.”

Herne also predicted how the next two rounds may play out in the title fight, suggesting his rival may have advantage at one venue.

“Tim Brook has definitely picked up the pace this year, they’ve done a bit of testing in Sydney,” Herne explained.

“At Bathurst, I think we’ll have the upper hand, but in Sydney I think we’re going to grab points and Brook will run away with a few race wins.”

But Herne is excited for the challenge Bathurst provides in a Trans Am beast, which he believes harks back to the past making it a satisfying experience when you get it right.

“The cars are really made for it,” Herne emphasised. “You’ve got the bagged tyre around the top it really loads up and the car bottoms out, slides, puts out smoke doing stupid things race cars used to do.

“It’s a great track for the cars and you really do have to think about the car as a mechanic. You have to choose between cooling out the brakes to make sure aren’t too hot and try to save for the end of the race or use them hard to pull out a gap at the start.

“I think there’s a lot that will go on next week and I’m looking forward to it.”
