James Golding confirmed for 2020 S5000 Championship

James Golding has confirmed his place on the 2020 Australian S5000 Championship grid, lining up with Garry Rogers Motorsport.

The former full-time Supercars Championship driver has turned his attention to S5000 after GRM withdrew from Supercars at the end of last year.

Golding’s 2020 year will be focused on the six S5000 rounds, starting at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park on March 12-15, bookend by the Bathurst International, where he’ll drive an S5000 in the category’s debut at the famous Mount Panorama circuit.

Adding to this S5000 endeavours will be his new Supercars endurance race deal alongside Mark Winterbottom at Team 18.

Golding competed in the two non-championship S5000 events at Sandown and The Bend Motorsport Park last season, scoring victory in the first-ever S5000 ‘feature race’ at Sandown.

Golding and GRM plan to conduct at least one pre-season test and announce the car’s full sponsorship deal ahead of the opening round at Albert Park.

“I can’t wait to get back in. The first two rounds were fantastic and it is a category that I have fallen in love with,” said James Golding.

“As soon as I had my first drive of the car, I knew I wanted to do the full championship.

“I’ve worked and raced at GRM for the past few years, so I know the team really well. We had strong pace at both events so I feel that we’ll be in with a good chance.

“I’m looking forward to getting to a few new tracks too. Places like Sydney Motorsport Park and Phillip Island are going to be a real challenge. There looks like there’s going to be some very fast guys in there as well that will make me work for the results.

“This is the perfect way to keep fit and sharp for the endurance races. I think these two types of cars will work hand in hand with each other.”

“We are really tickled to have ‘Bieber’ as part of our S5000 program in 2020,” said Garry Rogers.

“Jimmy was a big part of the construction of the cars last year, working alongside the whole GRM crew in creating a truly unique, Australian built and designed product.

“His driving skills, both at Sandown and Tailem Bend, was a real thrill to see and he added to the great success that the whole category is.”
